Learn new skills and make friends at NSB Library this January

The New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, offers a variety of free programs to help adults learn new skills and make new friends.

Genealogy assistance: 1 to 3 p.m. every Monday. Library volunteer Carolyn Carlisle will offer assistance on using the library’s free databases, which include Ancestry Library Edition, Heritage Quest, America’s Historical Newspapers and Fold 3. Find her in the computer lab. 

Ballroom dancing lessons: 5:30 p.m. every Monday in January. Members of the NSB Dance Club will provide instruction on Latin dancing for singles and couples. 

Chair yoga: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays from Jan. 10 through Feb. 14. This gentle form of yoga, which uses a chair for seated poses and support, is designed for seniors and the mobility impaired. Staff from Seat of the Soul Chair Yoga will lead these classes. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water.

Origami: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11. Learn the simple origami fold for lucky stars. Supplies will be provided. Registration is required; call (386) 424-2910, option 3, or visit volusialibrary.evanced.info/signup/List

Qigong: 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 12, 19 and 26. Reduce stress and relieve joint and muscle pain with qigong (pronounced chee-gong), an ancient Chinese practice that uses gentle physical movements, mental focus and meditation to improve well-being. Certified instructor Ann Minoff will lead the classes.

Knit and Crochet Club: 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 13. Bring a knitting or crochet project to stitch away the time with others. All skill levels are invited to share their knowledge and pick up tips from the experts. Yarn and needles will be provided. 

Create unique jewelry: 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20. Create unique jewelry and share tips. Participants should bring their own materials and tools. Jewelry and supplies cannot be sold, but swapping and sharing are encouraged.

The library is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
