After five weeks of programs ranging from concerts, lectures and cooking demonstration to a panel discussion, an original play and an art exhibit, Volusia County’s five-week NEA Big Read program will come to a close on Saturday, Feb. 29 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in style – beach style, that is. The public is invited to enjoy syncopated drum beats and munch on yummy s’mores around a fire pit on the beach just north of 27th Avenue in New Smyrna Beach.
Called Rhythm and Waves, the closing event for this year’s NEA Big Read program will feature the cool percussion beats of the 3rd Wheel Drummers. Just bring a chair and gather around for the fun and exciting final event of the NEA Big Read program that has been going on since Jan. 25.
The NEA Big Read is intended to encourage reading through a series of community events designed around a single book. The Volusia County Public Library system received a $15,000 NEA Big Read grant and selected the Celeste Ng novel “Everything I Never Told You” as its title. The Volusia County Council matched the grant with an additional $15,000. The library system’s branches and other venues are hosting more than 130 programs such as book discussions, author talks, concerts and informative presentations based on the novel.
