Libraries schedule healthy living programs in October

Pick up some health tips and get moving at your local library in October, which is Health Happens in Libraries Month.

The Volusia County Public Library system has planned nearly 100 programs to help adults and children improve their health.

Below are the programs scheduled at New Smyrna Beach Regional Library at 1001 S. Dixie Fwy. For a complete list of programs, visit


Five Wishes: 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct 3. Deb Korfage-Amborn of Halifax Health will share information about the Five Wishes living will program.

Hatha Yoga: 5:30 p.m. every Monday in October. Yoga instructor Holly Clement will lead a Hatha yoga class that will emphasize basic yoga poses. Wear comfortable clothing, bring a towel or mat and hydration. 

Books and cookies: 1 p.m. Thursday. Oct 10. Book lovers can share and discuss their favorite books over cookies. Meet new people and discover new books. Refreshments will be provided. 

Food Club: 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct 14. Bring a heart healthy dish and recipe to share.

Simple Cooking with Heart: 2 p.m. Monday, Oct 14. Eating healthy can be a lot simpler than most people think. Limiting sugar and making substitutions can go a long way toward improving your heart’s overall health. Applying simple steps to your cooking habits can help create great tasting, healthy meals that you and your family will love. 

Health Fair: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct 18. Community organizations will present information on a variety of health services and issues.  


Storytime: 10 a.m. Tuesdays. This traditional storytime, for ages 2-5, features reading, finger plays, music and activity songs. The theme will be “Who’s growing?” 
Lego Challenge: 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Imagine it? Build it with Lego blocks. Children in grades K-6 will be challenged to build different healthy creations at each program. Constructions will be displayed in the library.  
Baby Time: 10 a.m. Wednesdays. This early learning program provides a gentle introduction to rhyme, clapping, stories and other babies. Scarves and bubbles may be used. The theme for the Oct. 23 program will be healthy eating. Infants up to 2 years. 
Baby Play Date: 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Babies and caregivers can enjoy time together in this unstructured play program. Babies learn healthy nonverbal communication skills like sharing. Birth to 2 years.
Art Aces: 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays. Students can enjoy guided projects with a healthy twist in a creative atmosphere. Grades K-6.
Twinkle Tales: 6 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays. Jump in your jammies, bring your blankie or stuffed animal, and snuggle on the floor. We'll share stories and a whole lot more. Enjoy a fairy tale, a rhyme and a song. This month’s theme is “Who’s Growing?” Ages 2-7.
Listen Up: 10 a.m. Thursdays. Listen and learn while the librarian shares fun and funny books and songs. Each week has a healthy theme to explore. Parents and children enjoy a special time reading together, while waiting for "Shake it Up" to begin. Ages 2-6.
Shake it Up: 10:30 a.m. Thursdays. Jump into this exciting program with movement and activities set to music. Children learn to play together using the balance beam, tunnel, bean bags with music and musical chairs. Ages 2-6.
Teen Coloring: 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21. Teens unwind with an hour of coloring. All materials will be provided. Ages 11-17.
