The New Smyrna Beach Regional Library (1001 S Dixie Freeway) is planning two events to honor National Poetry Month, the largest literary celebration in the world.Volusia County students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit their poems for judging in the 16th annual Teen Poetry Contest sponsored by the Friends of the New Smyrna Beach Library. Cash prizes of $75, $50 and $25 will be awarded in middle school and high school divisions. Entry forms are available at the library. One entry per person will be accepted. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Thursday, April 18. Participants are invited to share their poems during a reception at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the library’s auditorium.Residents are invited to read or listen to original and favorite poems at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11.The Academy of American Poets established National Poetry Month in 1996 to encourage the reading of poems and highlight the legacy and ongoing achievements of American poets.Registration is not required for the free programs.
