The Florida Department of Transportation will be making repairs on the State Road (S.R.) 44 (South Causeway) bridge over the Indian River in New Smyrna Beach. The work involves replacing the timber supports and other components of the fender system, which acts like a bumper to protect bridge piers from boat collisions. The project will also replace the concrete cap and repair or replace concrete panels on the bulkhead, or seawall, at the east end of the bridge.
Most work will be performed during the day from the water using a barge. There may be occasional shoulder closures on the bridge to pour concrete. Lane closures, if needed, are only permitted at night from 9 PM to 6 AM.
For boaters, at least half of the channel will remain open at all times. Boaters are asked to use extra caution through the area.
Estimated project completion is Summer 2019.
