A Geographic Information System (GIS) stores geographic data that can be analyzed, managed, and edited. This data has both categorized information within it along with spatial references to where it exists on the planet. This data can be converted to tables and reports or used to create maps. The city uses mapping in most of its departments for such reasons as comparisons, analyses, and planning. Maps are also an essential tool for communicating with the public.
