Partnership & Outreach
The
Community Affairs Division sponsors numerous community service
and improvement programs that cover such areas as home and
personal safety and security, drug resistance education and
care for the elderly and disabled. These programs are geared
toward creating a safer community by promoting individual
safety for each resident and visitor.

Programs
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.)
We offer drug resistance life skills through the D.A.R.E. Program, which is currently taught to all area students in elementary and middle school grades. The D.A.R.E. Program provides students with accurate information about drugs and alcohol, teaches them ways to resist peer pressure and offers healthy alternatives to drug and alcohol abuse.

Security for the Elderly
We will conduct safety checks of your home and assist you in finding reliable, honest repair personnel. In the event you are unable to afford needed safety repairs to your home, area residents and businesses have offered to help defer the cost of such repairs.

Watch Program
If you will be away from your home or business for a few days, we can provide extra patrol service of your property while you are away. (House Watch Application Form)
Operation
I.D.
We can provide assistance to residents wishing to identify and mark their possessions through this nationwide program. Operation I.D. has proven to be very effective in identifying, protecting and recovering stolen property.

Protect-A-Kid
The City of New Smyrna Beach and the Police Department sponsor a Child Registry Program. Parents and/or guardians are able to obtain a registry handbook, fingerprints and a photograph of their child(ren) free of charge. The booklet contains vital information regarding the child and is kept by the parent in case of an emergency.
Personal
and Home Safety
We conduct safety checks of your home or business to advise you on how to better secure your property and provide you with safety information. This service is available to individuals, groups, organizations and business owners.
Police
Care
We offer daily telephone contact to residents of any age who are living alone or are handicapped and are concerned about their personal well being. (Police Care Application)
Police Intern Program
An individual, who meets the required standards for employment, may enter into a three-year contract with the police department. The individuals, at the police department’s expense, will be employed as a non-sworn part-time employee and will attend basic police recruit training. During this period, the individual will earn $10.00 per hour without any additional benefits.
After successful completion of academy training and achieving a passing score on the S.O.C.E., the intern shall be made a full-time probationary sworn officer with full benefits. The recruit officer will begin field training and the evaluation period and may be released from probation after six months.
Should the intern fail to achieve passing academy training or the S.O.C.E. or fail to meet probationary requirements or voluntarily choose to terminate his/her employment with the police department, the individuals will be required to reimburse the police department for all expenses associates with training during the three years as specified by the contract agreement.
Retail
Theft Prevention
We offer training sessions on business safety, employee safety and theft prevention to area retail businesses. We provide training updates after initial presentations regarding new con and financial fraud schemes.
