K-9 Unit
The
K-9 Unit is part of the overall Patrol Division and works
to provide support and assistance to other divisions and units.
It functions to stop drug traffic and as well as assisting
in the arrest and apprehension of criminal suspects, tracking
missing persons, locating evidence and finding lost property.
The New Smyrna Beach Police Department Canine Unit consists
of two full-service dogs assigned to the patrol division.
Each canine is dual-certified in the area of patrol and narcotics
detection. Both canines are trained in the areas of obedience,
area/building searches, criminal apprehension, article/evidence
searches, crowd control, helicopter deployment, and the protection
of the handler.
The
canine unit is often called upon to perform special details
in the area of narcotic investigations and the serving of
high-risk arrest warrants. The canine unit also performs numerous
demonstrations for the schools and public. The canine unit
is also active in the DARE Program.

History:
In December of 2001 K-9 Slade arrived at the Daytona Beach
Airport from Germany and was assigned to Officer Williams.
In April of 2002 Officer Williams and K-9 Slade completed
the 540 hour certification in the areas of patrol procedures
and narcotic detection. During the first week of service
K-9 Slade apprehended one burglary suspect and assisted
with six narcotic arrests. Officer Williams and K-9 Slade
will continue to train together and patrol the streets of
New Smyrna Beach as a team. Officer Williams and K-9 Slade
are currently assigned to the Delta Squad.
