Homicide Task Force

High School Introduction to Criminal Justice: High School students are provided with a course taught by a police officer for an introduction to criminal justice. Enables high school youth to gain a knowledge and understanding of the Criminal Justice System.
PALP.A.L. (Police Athletic League): An organization to instill in the youth of the community a philosophy of fair play,courtesy, consideration of others and foster an atmosphere of friendship, cooperation, trust and mutual respectbetween the police officers and the community and its young people.
Police Explorer Post: This is a registered affiliation of the Boy Scouts of America, wherein youth members (13 to 18) actively learn and participate with Police Officers in learning the duties and responsibilities of Law Enforcement. They participate in community events to assist Officers in the control of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Community organizations utilize their assistance in fund raising activities.

Traffic/Motor Unit:
In addition to protecting life and property as police officers, the Traffic/Motor Unit’s duty
is to enforce the street traffic regulations of the City of New Smyrna Beach, enforce the State’s vehicle laws applicable to traffic, make arrests for traffic violations, and to investigate traffic crashes. The unit cooperates
with the traffic engineer and other departments in developing ways and means to improve traffic conditions

Neighborhood Resource Officer:
A certified officer specifically trained to enforce a number of local ordinance violations, animal control violations and boating violations. This officer supplements the patrol officers in the detection of criminal activity; however, he/she has been trained in the apprehension of domesticated animals and operation of a police marine unit.

Community Based Programs
Citizen Volunteer Program is a multi-asset program through which specialize training is provided to civilian volunteers who conduct neighborhood security patrols, parking enforcement and aid in special events with crowd and traffic control. Other volunteers are selected to assist in the records management system and as departmental receptionists. (Volunteer Application)
