Community Outreach Programs
The
New Smyrna Beach Fire/Rescue Department is proud to be involved
in our community; we feel being involved within our community
is our pleasure and duty. Helping to make New Smyrna Beach a
better and safer place in which to live is our "Number
1" priority, after responding to emergencies. The following
is a list of some of the activities we participate in and offer,
in order to help meet this commitment. To schedule or register

Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
Classes

Fire/Rescue Department has been proactive for the past few
years trying to encourage various organizations
to place AEDs in their locations. As this trend catches
on all over the country,New
Smyrna Beach is poised to assist in this important training.

Blood
Pressure Checks
Free blood pressure checks are given daily at any of the stations
from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. if the crews are in quarters. Blood
pressures are also taken at local shopping centers every 3rd
Saturday of the month and at various special events throughout
the year.
CPR
Classes
The Fire/Rescue Department offers American Heart Association Classes
and American Red Cross CPR and First Aid Classes. Two classes
for Adult and/or Professional CPR are conducted each month with
Saturday classes running from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Scheduled
CPR dates are subject to change based on need, so please contact
the Fire Chief's Office to register. Special arrangements can
be made for community or organizational groups in order to meet
their specific needs. All ages are welcome.
First Aid Station for Special Events
We offer additional services and support to special sponsored
activities by providing a First Aid Station, taking blood pressures
and having safety programs available to the participants.
Fire
Prevention Week
Although safety lectures are provided throughout the year, special
emphasis is placed on presentations to schools, businesses and
groups during Fire Prevention Week.
Fire
Extinguisher Safety Class
Individuals, businesses, schools and organizations can learn
how to properly use fire extinguishers in a special class catered
to their needs. Fire/Rescue personnel also instruct students
in appropriate safety techniques.
High
School Job Shadowing
High school students have the ability to participate in our
Medical Academy and work with our paramedics during school hours.
They receive a wide range of knowledge about the medical field,
as well as information on what a career in firefighting or emergency
medical services would be like.
Hurricane
Preparedness and Other Emergencies
Fire/Rescue personnel will assist residents and business owners
with information and tips on how to prepare and plan for a hurricane
or other disaster. More information on emergency preparations

Risk
Watch
Risk Watch is a safety program designed for kindergarten through
fourth grade students and covers how to be safe around the environment
they are growing up in. Subjects discussed include motor vehicle
safety, fire and burn prevention, choking, suffocation and strangulation
prevention, poisoning, falls, firearms injury, bike and pedestrian
safety and water safety.
Safety
Surveys
Firefighters will perform safety surveys at any home or business
to help point out possible life and fire hazards. At the same
time, we also become familiar with each individual building
in case of emergencies.
Smoke
Detectors
The smoke detector program is designed to help promote home
safety. We will check out smoke detectors for proper operation
and install free batteries. Smoke detectors are offered at no
cost to those in need.
Sporting
Events
Medical standby is provided during youth sporting events and
during special events throughout the City.
