NSB Fire Department Hosts Multi-Agency Exercise
Downtown New Smyrna Beach
January 29 – February 7, 2007
The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department hosted a Confined Space Rescue Training drill at the Utilities Commission lift station in Old Fort Park located at the corner of Washington Street and Riverside Drive. Fire Departments from Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Ponce Inlet, Port Orange, South Daytona, and Volusia County and employees of the Utilities Commission joined in the training activities from January 29 through February 7, 2007.
Confined Space Rescue training simulates emergencies where Fire Department members enter the space underground in a confined area to rescue a trapped utility worker. Employees from the New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission provided technical support from a wastewater viewpoint during the exercise.
The training is a continuation of the Volusia County Fire Chiefs Association’s efforts to increase inter-agency cooperation and operability. Difficult and technical situations have the potential to overwhelm daily resources. Through these exercises, rescue personnel have an opportunity to practice better communication with other organizations, equipment familiarization, team building skills, as well as. the actual technical skills needed to safely complete the designated tasks.
